TRANSCRIPT

Anna Jonak: [00:00:47] Welcome to Episode 24 of the Brave Business Podcast we are Anna and Flori, the queens of small business and we deliver female entrepreneurs both the business and mindset tools needed to start, grow and scale your small business for success. Hello hello. We're back again. Another day, another podcast. It's been a while. It feels like a while when you batch record doesn't it?

Flori Pyke: [00:01:12] It certainly does. Actually I mean it's been like a good month at least, at least I'd say.

Anna Jonak: [00:01:18] That baby is ready to pop.

Flori Pyke: [00:01:22] I know. Check that out for any of our YouTube watchers, let's just give you a little glimpse.

Anna Jonak: [00:01:27] Can I just say that I can tell because whenever you're talking now I can hear that like [gasp]. The breathing is out. And you can, you can just hear that you have got like a child up in your lungs over the rib cage.

Flori Pyke: [00:01:41] I know it's crazy right. When I'm on a call with someone I'm like you'll just have to excuse me, it's not like I'm nervous or like having a cardiac arrest. It's just that I can't breathe 'coz there's like a baby in my rib. [laughing]

Anna Jonak: [00:01:56] There is a baby here basically. Oh my god I can't even. Oh you poor thing. We've just been discussing how Flori is ready to get the baby out. It's time. [laughing]

Flori Pyke: [00:02:05] I'm gonna try acupuncture. Here I come.

Anna Jonak: [00:02:11] I'm honestly so excited. I feel like I'm having a baby too. [both laughing]

Flori Pyke: [00:02:21] I think you are more excited than I am because you don't have to deal with like it all obviously. Like I'm excited but everyone's like are you excited and like I am. But I know too much now, I just know too much.

Anna Jonak: [00:02:32] You know that there's gonna be change coming. I get that but I think it's just like. I think I look at it as our BSFM family. Like it's an amazing little experience happening and I'm going to get some baby cuddles soon. Oh my God. I was like Flori's like having a bit of time off and I'm like can I come and visit though? [laughing]

Flori Pyke: [00:02:53] Yeh of course. I'm actually really excited about my hospital stay. I plan on maximising that to full potential. I told Mike, him and the kids can facetime me. [both laughing]

Anna Jonak: [00:03:05] Get out. That's brilliant . "No sorry I don't want you at the hospital. I'll see you later."

Flori Pyke: [00:03:08] Oh I'm having my staycation. You guys can just facetime me. I'm kind of kidding but I'm kind of not. I'm really excited for a bit of peace and quiet to be honest.

Anna Jonak: [00:03:19] You say that but I know you're going to be so bored.

Flori Pyke: [00:03:21] I know I am. I'm taking my laptop.

Anna Jonak: [00:03:25] Exactly. You're not meant to do anything. It's like you're having like a break and you're not going to be able to do it. Hashtag addicted. But I like to think that that is our business and that is why. Anyway let's get into winning and losing moments. Hashtag winning this week is all of the new staff that we have onboarded and the new changes we're making with regards to support staff and coaches and bringing on new talent. I am so pumped about that. Massive shout out to Caroline as she's come on as one of our coaches just kind of come on from being one of our students and stepped into a really great role, great experience, adds another dimension to what we do. Jo, our student liaison has also stepped up with regards to her knowledge on the SEO front and delivering some tidbits, just amazing seeing some extra staff coming on to help us in what we do. It's pretty exciting.

Flori Pyke: [00:04:18] Yeah I have to say. I mean we were just chatting about this and how great it's been and they're just such great additions to the team as well and you know you don't know what you don't know and they add that extra layer of knowledge and support and expertise and it's just great. I'm pumped.

Anna Jonak: [00:04:38] Yeah. You can't take, like you can't know everything and this is where the beauty is of just saying hey we get guest speakers to come in or hey we've got staff who really know this area it's their niche, they're trained in it and it just means that we can add like just extra value like our stuff is so jam packed and the people we have access to and bringing in across all these different platforms. We've just been talking Pinterest and YouTube and all these things is amazing. Oh God it's all so exciting. Lots of winning. Do you want to do your winning.

Flori Pyke: [00:05:08] Yes sure. So as you guys have heard if you're an avid listener of the Brave Business podcast we, my husband and I, we bought a house a while back and this is like a winning and a losing to be honest because I'm having a real love-hate relationship with DIYing lately where especially because I'm 39 weeks pregnant right now, we're essentially what happens every weekend and I don't know if I've even had time to tell you this Anna because there's been so much happening. But every weekend, remember how last weekend I was like I have to do the kids like all of Saturday. Because hubby was painting the house which is like cool but not so cool because a) you'd have to get out of the house and b) I'm running after the kids who I love but just 39 weeks pregnant.

Anna Jonak: [00:06:06] [laughing] Don't even say running because it wouldn't be running it will be waddling.

Flori Pyke: [00:06:09] It would be waddling and me like yelling at the top of my lungs. So it's like a love-hate relationship and I hate painting even though I haven't even painted a lick of paint to be fair because I'm refusing to. No it's just too hard. I can't even. But yeah that's my winning slash losing, painting and DIY.

Anna Jonak: [00:06:32] So the house is coming along nicely it's beautiful. But yes it comes with its downside. Talking of house today, we are in a rental at the moment and the tiles fell off the walls and they've decided they want to renovate both bathrooms which is a winning slash not winning because it's great they're going to look great. But the flip side of that is I got six weeks with like frigging drills and jackhammers in my bathrooms. I work from home. Are you kidding me? [Flori agrees] Oh my god anyway so won't dwell on that. That is kind of a losing moment. But I was actually just going for the losing to moan about the weather because I hate rain. [both laughing] I came from the UK. What's happening? But no, it's not fun. Poor kids where they're stuck at home in this kind of weather is not fun when you've got three kids.

Flori Pyke:[00:07:19] It's not fun for anyone.

Anna Jonak: [00:07:23] Yeh and going out walking. I like going out and walking and I literally went out yesterday in a hoodie and it soaked through and I was like I'm going out anyway. I got to get out. It has to happen. But anyway, let's get on to today's subject which is a pretty exciting one.

Flori Pyke: [00:07:32] It's a big one.

The moment

Anna Jonak: [00:07:33] It is a big one and I think one which will spark some interesting conversation controversy, who knows, but one I which we hope will give you lots to think about. So as many of you know we were at the Telstra Small Business Awards. We were a finalist there recently and it was truly one of the most epic nights ever. Like the lead up to it, the excitement. Oh my gosh it was something that I think that we'll both never forget and one that really did mark something pretty transformational for us. Now the whole thing behind Telstra Small Business Awards when you're in with them, is this whole concept around 'that moment'. It's like the whole thing that they pitch around it and they really want you to focus on thinking about the moments that have transformed your business or stood out in your business journey and the marketing inside on the inside of it when you're in there. That's what it was wasn't it? [Flori agrees] It was just all about expressing that moment. And when we were filling out our application we had to fill out what that moment was for us. And basically all we, I mean we've got so many moments and we'll share a few of them with you. But the key one for me which you've probably heard me talk about a lot is the moment when my husband was able to give up FIFO, fly in fly out. So basically came home and is now home every night. It's just the most incredible thing and I get goosebumps about it. And that moment was actually up on stage right next to the presenter's head because it was it was like a whole big collage of everybody's comments. So my husband was like, oh my god that's your comment, which is pretty cool. So anyway that's the theme which is going to follow through what we talk about today, tonight. What planet am I on? But why don't you share a bit about your moments. Let's do a couple of moments.

Flori Pyke: [00:09:16] Yeah well I think I mean like you said you know there's been so many moments independently and then like for both of us together in the business but I guess like on an independent level and I think I've talked about it a bit as well in this podcast as just you know before starting Business School for Mums I ran a digital marketing consultancy and like it was great on many levels particularly you know it grew really quickly and financially it was very fruitful but it just was so impractical with the children because I was travelling a lot and had to leave them with nannies and daycare and they were both like, like I had two under two, and I found that really really hard. And so when it came to the time that we realised like okay you know I set out with Business School for Mums and I said right. I remember saying to Mike I'm going to give this like one year and then you know if this is, if this works I'm gonna let go of the consultancy and when that happened when I took the jump I remember I was on holidays in Canada and I had like 3 weeks there to really reflect and we were starting to really pick up momentum. That was after one year and we had just started working with a mentor a few months back and like really started to see that okay this was going to be a lucrative business and we were onto something and we love doing, what we did, and it was so fulfilling and so in that time a kind of self reflection over those three weeks I said, I remember saying to you Anna and I was like I'm not going back. This is it. And it was a big leap and you know you back yourself and I cut off all my contracts with my clients and went full steam ahead with BSFM. Never looked back. It's been the best move ever. I'm so happy about it.

Anna Jonak: [00:11:19] One of those moments. I actually have a visual sitting in my mind which I don't think I captured and I should have done which was all the boxes in Perth that day I had a reflection day that when we packed up like to put everything, to take our lives from Perth to move back to Sydney where we wanted to be, to know that my husband was going to be by my side every night. I just remember just like, being like a bit of a stunned mullet like I can't believe it. So there were some pretty big moments for us and obviously being introduced was a pretty big moment.

Flori Pyke: [00:11:46] It was. Oh my God yeah. Who would have known.

Anna Jonak: [00:11:50] I mean I do feel like we're really friggin lucky because I mean three years.

Flori Pyke: [00:11:54] I get goosebumps actually.

Anna Jonak: [00:11:56] And we don't like, honest to God, we never fight. We never like really get into any disagreement and even if there ever is, it's always like a really logical conversation around the benefits.

Flori Pyke: [00:12:09] For the business, like for the better of the business. I agree. Yeah we're very lucky. It's like I get oh I'm getting a bit emotional. [both laughing] It's the hormones.

Anna Jonak: [00:12:23] Settle down.

Flori Pyke:[00:12:24] Ok maybe you should keep taking over [both laughing]

Anna Jonak: [00:12:25] Oh my god ok I love you too Flori. I just said, I don't know what I am going to do for 2 weeks. But anyway I guess where we're going with this story is that you know your business is full of those moments and certainly you know Telstra is celebrating all of that, but the event itself and actually the night where we did not win, which is completely and absolutely 100 percent you know totally groovy with that. It's not about winning or losing. It was so amazing to be there. We were absolutely privileged to be there. And actually we're really grateful for exactly what happened the way it happened because it really became a significant moment for us on that night which we genuinely believe will have one of the biggest impacts for our trajectory, our business, our students, Australian women, moving forward.

Telstra Small Business Awards Team BSFM

Flori Pyke: [00:13:19] Yeah I couldn't agree more and maybe we should paint more of a picture around what happened that night and that moment that we're talking about because there was a real big moment for both of us and that's what we want to share with you today on the podcast. So on the night, you know if you follow us on Insta, you would have seen us we were there frocked up and fancy with our hubbies and our amazing student liaison Jo who was able to join us. Unfortunately, we missed a couple of our team members for various important reasons but we did have Jo with us and that was that was really lovely. It was really special to have her there with us. [Anna agrees] So we were first category, remember, so we were emerging and energised and it's probably important to give you a little context around the category as well. So this category is basically for businesses that are newcomers on the scene. So they are less than three years old in operation but that are already making a huge impact in their respective fields and that's what we were nominated for by a number of students apparently over the course of time I've heard because I don't know if I told you this Anna. Occasionally, you know when I posted about it and I said Oh thanks to so and so and so then I get messages from other students saying Oh but I nominated you too. I was like that's so sweet anyway...

Anna Jonak: [00:14:49] Thank you

Flori Pyke:[00:14:49] ...I know thank you, like honestly thank you. And anyway we were incredibly humbled to be surrounded in this category by some incredible success stories when it comes to business including the likes of a business called Art Money, Designbx, Icon by Design, and Manly Spirits Co just to name a few. There were a few others as well. And so we finished our appies I think we could barely eat. We were so excited slash nervous.

Anna Jonak: [00:15:23] And slash wanting to vomit just in case.

Flori Pyke: [00:15:26] Totally with our little scripted thank you presentations that you had prepared.

Anna Jonak: [00:15:34] That's right. We were told that you had to have a speech prepared. We weren't allowed to wing it. So everybody was told to write speeches no matter what.

Flori Pyke: [00:15:42] Yeah so Anna wrote her little speech and I had it, you know in my sweaty palm ready to crack open. And as the announcer stood at the stage and she opened the envelope to share with us the winner, we really waited very anxiously and for us, it was interesting the moment that we were not chosen was a huge moment for us and one that we will never forget and one that we truly feel has ignited a serious fire within us to play bigger with Business School for Mums and as part of this to be able to impact even more women and mums faster than ever.

Anna Jonak: [00:16:30] Yeah it was. It was you know it was so full of emotion wasn't it? And it wasn't about the disappointment of not winning. I think it was about the perspective that we had through listening to the businesses that were up, through listening to the winner, through being sat at the table with us that time with Booktopia who actually like literally won the whole night, in terms of like, they're huge.

Flori Pyke: [00:16:55] But what was interesting sorry, talk about how many times they were there.

Anna Jonak: [00:17:02] As finalist, they had been there for seven years running. This is the one year that they had won their category which is like I mean it was phenomenal listening to their story, but being in the room with these people and hearing these stories and the journeys and everything else really put into perspective for us I think where we were at and how much more we still had to do. And one of the biggest things that changed I guess is that as you probably would have been aware, not everyone may have noticed it, we've certainly talked about it a bit, is that before we went to Telstra on the path that we were on is that we'd launched the Anna and Flori brand. So we basically had created an umbrella brand which our businesses would sit under. So we had the Business School for Mums podcast, Beyond Brave mastermind and basically we'd launched it about a month before, you know thinking about what a bigger picture vision was then which wasn't thinking that far out it was definitely about giving us more scope to develop our brand outwards and reach new markets and things like that. But...

The wakeup call

Flori Pyke: [00:17:59] Yeah when we didn't win it really did make us reflect on whether we'd made the right choice basically. Like had we made the right choice with this name change from Business School for Mums to Anna and Flori. And we mulled over it a lot and it just I think we both felt that it didn't really, yeah it didn't sit well with us and we deliberated at about it a lot with our team, with our husbands, with the people who were closest with and know the most about the business. And yeah we decided to revert back. So Anna and Flori was very short lived. And yeah we want to take you through now just some of the reasons why we decided to do this.

Anna Jonak: [00:18:50] And I guess how this moment kind of brought all this to the front of mind and kind of helped us make that change. But yes so Anna and Flori is no more. The website doesn't exist you'll see that we changed back our socials oh my god that was a pain in the butt in itself. [laughing]

Flori Pyke: [00:19:05] It was a bloody mission.

Anna Jonak: [00:19:07] To actually change it out the first time and then change it back. But anyway yeah we had a bigger picture vision in mind which at the time when we made the decision it was for a reason but I think that the awakening moment that we had on the Telstra night was very much that Business School for Mums was actually truly our business baby, it was born out of a desire to really create social change for women, for mums, to have further opportunities outside of traditional employment. To have mindset coaching and life coaching, to help them work through the ups and downs along with providing them these amazing tools. It's a brand that we both believed in so much and we obviously created based on our own experiences of motherhood. We were both emotionally very attached to it. I have to say when we launched Anna and Flori, there was always something that really never sat right with me. Flori will know I was like that just the website isn't, I just kept going back tell my, this is something not quite right. But I think it just for me didn't feel authentic to who we were and what we had represented up until that point. And the reason that we'd gone into business and we've spent three years loving and developing this brand and working with all these amazing community. You know our website, our socials, so many people that we'd create connections with and our students that really demonstrated this whole thing about ethos about what we stood for. And for me like well for both of us, Anna and Flori began to feel like it was diluting the message away from that, like it was taking away from the original reason we started our business. It was taking us towards a market or a different space that I don't even think that we necessarily really wanted but we felt that we should maybe in some way.

Flori Pyke: [00:20:45] Yeah and I think well I think even like there's a few things I want to touch on to elaborate on what you've said Anna which I couldn't agree more on but it, like for one, even just the name you know Business School for Mums versus Anna and Flori, there's a whole story there. When you say Business School for Mums and I know you know, I'm sure you find the same Anna when someone asks you What do you do and you say well I'm the co-founder of this business it's called Business School for Mums. You don't even have to explain it. They're like wow that's so cool. Tell me more. You know and you don't get that same kind of like story and messaging and visual when you say oh well I'm the co-founder of Anna and Flori. Well ok and that's that. It's not as compelling. Like it just kind of lost it's you know what we stand for and what we're all about. And I also think that Anna and Flori was born a bit out of fear to be perfectly honest for you. You know, we with Business School for Mums we've had a lot of ups and downs and it has been a tough market to crack. [Anna agrees] We're mums, we get it, you know we are price sensitive. Especially when you're starting out in a business because you're usually on one income. It's your partners or your hubbies or you know this is a side hustle and it's hard to justify investments like this in yourself, in your business when you start off and that has been a constant challenge that Anna and I have had to surmount basically and in time you know it's getting easier. But there have been many moments where we've found that very disheartening sometimes because we believe so much in what we do and we love doing what we do and sometimes it can be yeah just hard.

Anna Jonak: [00:22:50] The value of what we offer, we know that it's completely valuable and going to transform the business. But we see so much. the fear of investment [Flori agrees] and that kind of like focus on lack or fear of failing or early starting out or a lot of times as well people not quite backing themselves or willing to go the whole way. So we see this in mindset block so we know our target really well but yet there was a lot of objection and concerns when it comes to this the first step. Never once they've made the first step.

Flori Pyke: [00:23:21] Oh no

Anna Jonak: [00:23:21] Once they're in and that's it. The transformation begins. But yeah it's certainly not a market where people you know just have got a massive cash flow and yeh it's like a drop in the pond here we go.

Flori Pyke: [00:23:35] Yeah exactly. So it has come with its fair share of challenges and I think that was one of the reasons certainly why you know where Anna and Flori was born out of. And you know why we reverted back to Business School for Mums is that we have massive dreams for it honestly and when that moment happened that she opened the card that announced the winner and it wasn't us. I think we both just realised like s**t here we are, we're sitting in amongst this room of incredible business founders and successful entrepreneurs. It was so humbling to even be there.

The comeback

And I think it made us realise that we once, we have such a long path yet to travel and that we want so much more for Business School for Mums and that we want to become an iconic hub of education for mums Australia wide and worldwide too for that matter, you know as the place basically that all mums plug into to further their businesses and be it for incredible free resources or you know our signature online business programs, Small Business Pro, in person training events, a mastermind what have you. We want to be the "go to" basically when it comes to educating mums in business and that moment really highlighted that for us.

Anna Jonak: [00:25:06] Yeah we were in the room with Business School for Mums. It's been recognised for the impact it already had. When we wrote out our business plan and all that content around it and looked at the volume of reach of tens of thousands of women through the challenges we'd run and the cheatsheets we've done, and all these bits and pieces. And Bo always says to me that when they did our announcement about whose business to get that kind of the plaque thing. When they kind of talked about the impact that we'd had in reaching tens of thousands of women he said people around the room were like [gasp] And he was like I felt that for you. I think you and I were probably just trying to concentrate...

Flori Pyke: [00:25:44] I couldn't even hear.

Anna Jonak: [00:25:45] [laughing]...trying to walk and not fall over. And obviously you had to do stairs in a long dress and a big belly. [both laughing] But yeah it was. I think it was that, it was realising that we'd had such an impact on our students. It was a struggle like I said that fear of what, you know it's hard sometimes and everything else, it was really time to go hang on a second, it's time to back ourselves. Look, look at this. This is to get out of fear. And I think it's important to share that we have had moments of that because we've done some phenomenal things and we go at fast pace. But you know in this instance we made some decisions that maybe at the time they suited but we obviously realised that it wasn't going to be what we wanted in the long term and so what our vision really is as Flori said is to be this place and you're going to see if you go check out our website now you'll see that we've already started implementing this the Business School for Mums has got a whole freebies and resources section there for you now with trainings and cheatsheets you can download. We've got video tips coming soon. Like we sincerely want to be a place where if you don't have the funds right now, you're not ready, you're going to get some serious gold and some great thoughts starters and some stuff that you can start applying to business. You certainly know that if you listen to our podcast we don't hold back we definitely deliver you actionable stuff. And we've also recently launched which I'm so pumped about Success Live, our two day training event which consolidates basically a small portion of our online program all of the foundation building stuff and takes you through nine pillars to small business success in a weekend.

Flori Pyke:[00:27:19] Winning

Anna Jonak: [00:27:19] Get on the train! I'm so excited about it just to have them like like you know how impactful events can be. The emotion, the movement like bringing the mindset, the marketing and all the things we're going to bring. I genuinely see people having like, oh just a complete transformational weekend which gets them so motivated. And I can't wait to do some mindset ninja work in a room with 20 people, so good.

Flori Pyke: [00:27:50] Watch out world. [laughing]

Anna Jonak:[00:27:50]  Watch out world. And we've also talked about doing because you being a ninja on your Facebook ads doing your Facebook ads intensive training for people who want to come learn how to set up ads themselves. I'd love to do actual specific mindset training as well. God and there's more like we'd love, we want to work towards an office with breakout rooms for our members to come and just drop in and have meetings or book in as part of their program. They can access it and maybe even get some hot desks in there. It's big.

Flori Pyke: [00:28:19] Yeah I know. I know it's big and it's really exciting. It's really exciting and we've also just increased the team like I mean you shared a winning moment when we started off the episode but we've got additional coaches already on board to give value on things like SEO and e-commerce. We're also bringing on a V.A. to handle more of our socials and our content strategy, which is like it's just, it's awesome you know and yeah we're going big.

Anna Jonak: [00:28:52] Go big or go home, right?

Flori Pyke: [00:28:53] That's right. And I feel that moment was the defining moment that really kind of switched our mindset from you know being looking at this as a small business to something that no, you know, we want to have worldwide impact and we're very passionate and dedicated to it. So why are we sharing all this with you. Well because, well we made a mistake you know by changing out everything which was a lot. Let me just put it this way there was a lot of time, money, and energy spent on this mistake [Anna agrees] but may this mistake that we made really inspire you all who are listening. Honestly to keep on keeping on because you are going to make mistakes and they're going to cost you. But you know one thing that we can assure you of is that when you do make them and the same way you're going to continue making them the same way we will. The important thing to learn is sorry to really learn from them to reflect on what you've done wrong and so that you can come back stronger which is what we're doing.

Anna Jonak: [00:30:07] Totally do you know what I'm going to talk a bit about a presentation I'm running for our students in a minute but there's a slide in there that I've got. And they'll see. Which is like the set back sucks but the frigging comeback is like bring it. And I was like that is it. Yeah totally. I think it's important. The first thing is that we want to acknowledge what we did. I think it's to say for anyone that saw that happen. And we wanted to make a space to acknowledge why we did what we did to say you know this is this, this happened. And to give you the reasons why behind it, so that you can follow our journey but also to give you that transparency so you can see where things don't go right and people worry all the time about making mistakes and doing things wrong and I'm literally writing and running a class at the moment where I'm troubleshooting lots of stuff and hot seatting with our students about their mindset roadblocks and making mistakes is a huge thing that people fear. And this really does quite often come down to perfection or fear of being judged or getting things right. And I think we we really want to share that sometimes you actually need to make mistakes though and have those failings to get to what's right in the end. Because I don't know whether if we hadn't even launched Anna and Flori at all whether we would have had the same level of awakening by the time we got there. Do you see what I mean. [Flori agrees] So it's almost these things needed to play out even though it was costly in time or money for us to get to our true purpose and bring us back to where we wanted to be. So from a mindset perspective, this is about you know, making decisions and being okay when you know things get f****d up. But it's how you respond to it and being okay with being flexible making changes because I mean we went out for dinner and talked about it and it wasn't like oh my god we have to make a big deal about it and we need to know. So we need to stress we were like you know what, it's not right. So let's just set it right. Yeah. And that was it.

Flori Pyke: [00:31:55] And then the wheels were in motion again just to set it all back and like we said you know we spent time and money and energy making the mistake but the mistake has been made and we've learned a ton from it and it's also ignited this incredible fire within us. So it's all kind of like you know it's all worked out for the best in many ways I think. Exactly to your point like would we have had such a moment of enlightenment at that moment had we not changed to Anna and Flori would we have had such fire ignited within us to want so much for Business School for Mums. I honestly probably think not. So there you have it. You know that moment for us that really changed everything and that has truly marked the start of enormous change and the impact that we are having and that we plan to continue having with Business School for Mums. Now just on that note before we leave you to it. And this is it, I guess the parting thought for today, you can only go forward by making mistakes - Alexander McQueen.

Flori Pyke: [00:34:20] I love that one.

Anna Jonak: [00:34:22] Totally, it does what it says on the tin.

Flori Pyke: [00:34:26] Totally agree. [both laughing]

Anna Jonak: [00:34:29] Oh well, and remember, ladies be brave in your business.
