An introduction to us
Florencia Pyke: [00:01:07] Welcome to episode one of our Brave Business podcast.
Anna Jonak: [00:01:11] Woohoo we're here [Flori laughs].
Florencia Pyke: [00:01:11] We are...
Anna Jonak: [00:01:16] Anna
Florencia Pyke: [00:01:16] and Flori, the founders of Business School for Mums, an online business school completely dedicated to seeing mums in business thrive. And OMG [together], we are beyond excited to bring you this brand new podcast. It's honestly been something that we've been thinking about for like a year. Yeah.
Anna Jonak: [00:01:36] Oh yeah. It's been in the pipeline for little while. But let's be honest it takes a little bit of work pulling off a podcast [both laugh]. For those of you that have been doing it for a while hats off to you. We've been in mega preparation mode for the last wee while and oh my God just the tech, the sound, the audio, the mike.
Florencia Pyke: [00:01:54] Whoa yeah it is a bit of an undertaking as we have learned but...
Anna Jonak: [00:01:59] ... we're in now we're ready, we're ready to do this. And we have a lot of gold in store for you. So get ready, get ready for lots of awesome content coming your way and you're also going to see that we want to be delivering you lots of wake up calls as well but we'll get into a bit more about what this podcast is all about in a minute. But first up:
Florencia Pyke: [00:02:18] Today yeah. So today this episode is really it's a bit of a quick intro into us. We really just want...
Anna Jonak: [00:02:29] ... to say hello
Florencia Pyke: [00:02:29] For you to learn a little bit more about us and just to understand what we're all about as well as a business school and to understand our vision and our mission for creating this podcast and all the awesomeness and value that's around the corner.
Anna Jonak: [00:02:49] So we'll look let's start with a little intro. I'll just say hello Anna here, Anna Jonak, Mum of three under five soon to be five my biggest one, I'm co-founder of BSFM and been in small business now for about four and a half years. Just saying like Holy Moly that time has absolutely flown. I actually can't believe four and a half years. That's like half my like adult career.
Florencia Pyke: [00:03:11] It goes quickly. It's crazy.
Florencia Pyke: [00:03:13] And basically why did I decide to go into the small business world. A few reasons: My career pre-baby was, let's say, full on, media career heavy drinking, lots of partying, late nights, taking clients out, just couldn't do that with a baby like this wasn't going to happen and also got a FIFO husband. I did have a FIFO husband I should say.
Florencia Pyke: [00:03:34] You should explain what that is.
Anna Jonak: [00:03:34] Oh yeah fly in fly out. So he's a geologist and basically for the first three years of babies, he was away for like half the year basically.
Florencia Pyke: [00:03:47] Yeah that's fun.
Anna Jonak: [00:03:47] That was fun. Yes especially when there was one point there were three under three and a husband that was away for one week on one week off but let's not go there. He's not there anymore thank you, thanks to our business actually. We were able to bring him home so he is now at home everyday and has been able to develop his own direction, which is awesome, and a really big big one for kind of like starting a baby, is, the opportunity to go and...
Florencia Pyke: [00:04:14] Starting this baby.
Anna Jonak: [00:04:14] Starting this! [Flori laughs] Another baby! Yeah why not - four babies. And yeah like who doesn't like I'm sure many of you have dreams or had dreams about starting your own business and that was definitely it for me, I really wanted to go into life coaching and retrain so I was like man I've got to take this opportunity whilst I can so I dove in headfirst, did a life coaching diploma and oh my god turn my world upside down in the most amazing way and then went on to work with tons of mums helping them through the identity crisis that some mums have - I know that I had it. What about you?
Florencia Pyke: [00:04:44] I don't think I struggle with that personally as much, the identity stuff, but I certainly know that I enjoyed working with mums and we'll talk a little bit more about how that all came together.
Anna Jonak: [00:04:55] Yeah. Well the identity thing for me like holy moly what happened just had kids and where am I. So I really enjoyed kind of working through I guess that for myself as well as working with other mums. As I worked through this stuff with mums I saw the same recurring theme about pretty much what I was doing starting my own business. Women wanted to do the same thing. Which we completely get. But it's no mean feat. And you kind of need to know a little bit about what to do in order to get there and I found that I ended up writing business plans for people because of my previous career and saw this kind of gap in the market and I was like wow I've got an idea I really want to bring the life coaching together with the business elements, but I was definitely missing a piece to my puzzle which was what Flori absolutely filled with gusto, which was all of the Ninja marketing that she brings to the table.
Florencia Pyke: [00:05:40] Oh blushing over here. [both laugh]
Anna Jonak: [00:05:43] Oh my God. While there was I remember having a phone call with you and being like 'whoa there's so much I don't know'.
Florencia Pyke: [00:05:50] Yeah but vice versa because I think you did some coaching on me and I was like 'whoa she's intense'. [both laugh]
Anna Jonak: [00:05:58] Intense. We've both been called that a few times. There might be something in that. But anyway so that's a bit about me. That's where I came from where I came to be and was fortunate enough to meet Flori at a point when this idea was bubbling away to work with mums and kind of create this online business school and she really completed and filled everything that I didn't have and we feel like now we've just got the most amazing kind of collab.
Florencia Pyke: [00:06:19] Ying-yang.
Anna Jonak: [00:06:19] That we can bring to everybody.
Florencia Pyke: [00:06:21] Yeah well I was going to say fortunate like the feeling is so mutual we often talk about how lucky we are to have been introduced to each other because at the time, when I was introduced to Anna I had two babies under the age of two and I had created a digital marketing consultancy which was going great but it was completely impractical, with young kids and my husband at the time he actually played for the Swans so he was away every other weekend and had, you know, very intense schedule around training.
Anna Jonak: [00:06:57] We definitely bonded over that didn't we. Wayward husbands that just weren't around like 'oh my god my husband's away again'.
Florencia Pyke: [00:07:04] So when she floated the idea with me to create something like Business School for Mums I really jumped at the opportunity because I was sick of travelling and to travel virtually every week around Australia to see my clients and it was great. The business was growing really well and growing a lot but it was really taxing because, you know like Anna, both Mike my husband and I are Canadians so we don't have family here and I couldn't count on him. So you know I was trying to find babysitters to do two kids under 2 and travel and it was just ...
Anna Jonak: [00:07:45] ... stressful. Definately stressful.
Florencia Pyke: [00:07:45] Yeah it was full on and so I said you know, why not, let's try this out and see how we go and I kind of gave it a year and said you know I remember talking to Mike about this, and I was like, I'm just going to give this a year and we'll see how we go and after a year I was able to let go of that. I get goose bumps because it was so great to be able to let go of the consulting as much as I love my clients but the travel was really it's an impractical thing to do with young kids.
Anna Jonak: [00:08:16] I remember coming over and you doing drop off and getting really emotional about doing drop off.
Florencia Pyke: [00:08:21] It was hard man. And so you know BSFM took off really quickly.
Anna Jonak: [00:08:26] Yeah, given it was just an idea and it was something that we were going to do as a collaborative thing like with both our businesses my coaching practice and your consultancy. It just kind of I think we both got so excited by the concept and the potential after all the research we did and then it just spiralled from something that was so tiny to like you know let's make it an actual business, let's register the business name and let's do this this and this [Flori agrees] And yes it happened so fast.
What we bring to the table
Florencia Pyke: [00:08:49] It did I think as well whilst we're doing this intro I think it's probably important for our listeners to know a bit about our qualifications. [Anna agrees] So why don't you tell them a bit about what you've trained as in particular and then I'll tell them a little bit about myself.
Anna Jonak: [00:09:04] So yes I did my diploma in life coaching and basically did lots of meta dynamics and NLP work which is stuff that we'll definitely discuss as we go into mindset and everything else but it's very much all about mindset and emotional development and I have a degree in psychology as well. So Flori loves that side of me when I go to the psychology side and but aside from that my background prior to that was in media and advertising and spent 10 years doing that kind of stuff. So kind of a real mixed bag and lots of research thrown in there as well. Bit of a numbers nerd over here.
Florencia Pyke: [00:09:35] Yeah, total nerd [Anna laughs] wish I could put some nerd glasses on you right now. [both laugh]
Anna Jonak: [00:09:41] You could just imagine.
Florencia Pyke: [00:09:44] Yeah. And I so I actually started this digital marketing consultancy when I was finishing my MBA with a focus on marketing and before that I completed my bachelor of commerce with a focus on entrepreneurship so I always knew...
Anna Jonak: [00:09:57] ... always sounds very special. When she says those things I'm like 'sounds so fancy'.
Florencia Pyke: [00:10:01] I don't know about that but I definitely always knew that I wanted to do something for myself. And so here we are.
Anna Jonak: [00:10:09] Yeah very very exciting. Like yeh, we still have to thank Susanna for introducing us. [Flori agrees] We still owe that lady a big drink she told us that we're both very intense and we might like each other and we did and we actually should say as well that we spent the first few years, two years, living in different states and so our whole business was run via pretty much my messenger and still is quite a lot actually. We are on Facebook and that's how we communicate a lot and phone calls. We do speak now and again just a little bit. "Who's on the phone? Your work wife!"[in a male voice] [both laugh] Yeah that's it. Anyway, that's a little bit about us and our backgrounds and where we came from and I guess why we decided to do what we did and where Business School for Mums came about. And I guess now really let's think about why we decided to do this podcast. For one that let's be honest we have like had our students been clamouring for something like this for a little while and our followers it's something that a lot of people have been kind of like, 'c'mon when are you going to do it' 'like when we've got the time', which is now. We've made that time now and we're dedicating this podcast to basically female entrepreneurs wanting to create transformation. There's going to be, this is a bit of a podcast with a twist that you can pretty much get from the name.
#TheBraveBusinessPodcast "Getting you out of your comfort zone because that's where the magic happens"
Florencia Pyke: [00:11:23] Yeah exactly. So it's called Brave Business podcast for a reason. So we're going to be driving you really just step outside of your comfort zone because that's where the magic happens. That's where the results really happen and I'm connecting you with your power to create results and sounds a little bit, cheesy maybe but...
Anna Jonak: [00:11:47] She doesn't like the cheese or the woo woo [Flori laughs]
Florencia Pyke: [00:11:50] But it is your power and it is incredibly true and we exercise this every day in Business School for Mums and it's been really imperative to [Anna agrees] you know our fast growth.
Anna Jonak: [00:12:07] It's the whole, I think the whole thing about the podcast is that it's as much as you're going to see a lot around business strategy and marketing and all those other things. Our point of difference as a business is definitely the life coaching element and the mindset. And when we talk about connecting you with your power it really is about you realising that you are in control and learning how to be productive and how to change your mindset to get uncomfortable. And so no matter what we teach you the whole way through this podcast or the episodes it's really about driving you coming back to a place where you're taking the steps you need to take to get results in your business and we want you to give yourself permission to be doing this like wherever you're coming from to really lean into it and go into a wholeheartedly. So you will get a bit of the fluffy stuff from me.
Florencia Pyke: [00:12:48] Yeah but I think you know you see that Anna, fluffy and I and a joked about you know very lightly before but, it's incredible you know when you ask our students what's been the most transformative element for them, what's been the thing that's changed their business for them. I would say 99 percent of our data shows us that it's really around the mindset element and that when they've been able to change that mindset element you know the results have changed, their businesses have changed our lives have changed and that it's really impacted way beyond just the business ...
Anna Jonak: [00:13:24] ... certainly beyond the business in terms of home life and everything else. And I know that from one of the kind of things I'm writing at the moment. But I think it's the ability that they then take the necessary steps and apply all the other things. So it's like once that confidence and that self trust starts to grow then that's when you start taking all the necessary steps to go and do all the other things.
Florencia Pyke: [00:13:43] Yeah I totally agree and I think it's important also to mention that you know this element of mindset, you know you see you come across so many business courses out there that cover marketing and then cover the business side obviously but they don't cover the mindset side and yet that is the critical ingredient really to being successful. Because if you can't drive yourself through the ups and downs who is going to do it for you
Anna Jonak: [00:14:07] And God there are ups and downs over so many ups and downs, [Flori agrees] and we'll definitely be talking about, we will talk about those over the next few episodes the ones that we've been through, the ones that we've seen because you really have to learn to pick yourself up and keep going. Like holy moly. Anyway we'll get on some of those stories with you. But it is so important if you've got your head in the right place then you can learn to pick yourself up from those or once you've kind of climbed one mountain, you get to the top and you go oh crap where do we go next. [both laugh]
Florencia Pyke: [00:14:39] Yeah I know. It's so true now in terms of the delivery of the content of our Brave Business podcast we're really going to be mixing things up later. Yeah we're going to be teaching, delivering live business coaching, so doing some hotseats, actually.
Anna Jonak: [00:14:53] We're excited about that with YOU. So if you're ready - put your hand up. We really want to hear from you.
Florencia Pyke: [00:14:59] Yeah. And there's also going to be interviews, Q and A sessions. Honestly you name it and it's all going to be centralised around business marketing and obviously that all important mindset element.
Florencia Pyke: [00:15:46] Yeah. I mean ultimately we're here to help you get results in your business and in your life so that comes from us understanding what it is that you need, you know.
Anna Jonak: [00:15:55] So yeah you'll be talking directly to us so please drop us an e-mail and we will absolutely email you back and I say that wholeheartedly because I know there's a few people that say that on their podcast and they never do. I've actually sent emails to people going oh my god that was such a good episode. Nothing. [together] So we promise, you will hear from us. Yes yes. And frequency, so you are going to be hearing from us weekly. We're going to be releasing material every week to you on a Wednesday so get that in the diary.

Okay so you'll be able to dive straight into that right after you finish listening to this intro. And in that second episode we're going to be talking about three essential foundation blocks to really ensure that your business is set up for success.
Anna Jonak: [00:16:52] Yep and we're going to be giving you a bit of a surprising angle on that. So we know that we take a slightly different direction with that episode and you definitely want to tune in for it. So we absolutely urge you to like literally once we wrap this one up, go jump into it. There is an amaze balls, even if I do say so myself, workbook there waiting for you as well. Before we jump in to episode two for you and that is that you cannot swim for new horizons until you have courage to lose sight of the shore and that awesome quote is by William Faulkner.
Anna Jonak: [00:18:01] Yep and that's it we're going to wrap it up now and do remember - Be brave in your business.
